A Kingdom That Could Not Keep Its Captives' Hearts

The opening of Daniel is more than the story of a defeated city. The king of Babylon could transport sacred vessels, appoint teachers, select a royal diet, and assign new names. Yet Daniel could still purpose in his heart to remain faithful to God (Daniel 1:8).

As you explore, consider this question: What parts of Daniel's circumstances were beyond his control, and what choice remained his own?

Read the historical background

In 605 BC, Babylonian forces defeated Egypt at Carchemish (Jeremiah 46:2). Babylon subsequently dominated Judah. Daniel 1 introduces the removal of temple vessels and the selection of young Judeans for education in the Babylonian court. The biblical account does not identify Daniel's exact travel route or age.

Who Held the Future?

“In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it. And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God...”
DANIEL 1:1–2 · KING JAMES VERSION

Daniel begins with a conquered city, but the narrative makes an extraordinary claim: God remains sovereign even in the midst of defeat.
